The Role of Fabricators and Installers in Pollution Control

According to estimates from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), gaseous emissions of air pollutants have significantly decreased since 1980, resulting in higher air quality. However, while organizations worldwide have managed to dramatically cut down on the environmental impact of their operations, reducing environmental pollution remains an important goal for many.

Goodhart Sons has the expertise in fabrication and installation of an array of air pollution control systems and components.

Fabrication Projects Helping Control Pollution

From fume scrubbers to industrial tanks, steel fabrication processes facilitate innovative solutions for pollution control. Here are a few examples of steel fabrication projects that help to reduce contaminants:

  • Regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs): RTOs remove pollutants from exhaust streams through high-temperature combustion. This process oxidizes the pollutants, turning them into carbon dioxide and water. The RTO then releases the air and begins the next combustion cycle using the residual heat from the previous cycle.
  • Scrubbers: Scrubbers physically separate particulate matter from the oxygen in emissions and either absorb them or capture them in chambers where they are converted into safer substances before being released. These devices come in two forms — dry scrubbers and wet scrubbers.
  • Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs): ESPs are highly efficient systems that clean air streams by applying an electrical charge to pollutants and collecting them with a collector plate that has a contrasting charge. You can remove the pollutants as dry material, known as dry ESPs. You can also wash off the plates using water, which turns the particles into wet ESPs.

Installation of Air Pollution Control Equipment

Reducing downtime is a critical element of the conversion process. Working with a reliable steel fabrication team and a dependable installation team will help you convert your facility with high-quality results and minimal downtime.

VAM Emission Control Abatement Systems

According to the EPA, ventilation air methane (VAM) is one of the largest sources of methane emissions for the mining industry. These emissions are a waste of valuable energy and a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Installing a steel VAM emission control abatement system helps solve this issue by using high-temperature oxidation to eliminate gaseous methane before venting.

Baghouse Conversions

Aging precipitators are no longer as effective at meeting national emissions requirements as they once were, which is why it’s necessary to convert them into baghouses.

Baghouses are some of the most widely used dust collection systems due to their cost effectiveness and high efficiency. Steel fabrication is essential for producing important baghouse components, including the necessary structural supports, ventilation systems, ducts, and piping.
