127’-0” x 3’-4” I.D. Dual-Wall Kiln Combustion System Exhaust Stack
At Goodhart Sons, we pride ourselves on tackling complex projects with precision and expertise. One project recently completed involved the fabrication of a 127’-0” x 3’-4” I.D. dual-wall steel stack for a kiln combustion system. The external structural shell was fabricated from carbon steel, with the internal, independent liner fabricated from 316L stainless steel. The completion of this tall structure highlights our team’s skill in complex fabrication, subsequently allowing for seamless field installation. Although our team did not install this project, our understanding of how precision in the shop translates to precision in the field resulted in a very happy customer.
Key Features of the Stack:
- Double-Walled and Insulated: Due to the nature of the double wall, tolerance of the inner shell was pivotal in order to ensure proper installation of the insulation.
- Fabricated in Three Sections: To ensure efficient transportation and installation, the stack was fabricated in three sections. Careful detailing was essential to ensure all components fit together perfectly during assembly, maintaining the integrity of the final structure.
- Helical Strakes for Offsetting Stack Oscillations: Due to their helical shape, strakes can sometimes prove a tricky element of stack fabrication. Our team strategized on the most efficient means of welding the strakes to the outer shell of the stack to ensure timeliness of completion in this aspect of fabrication.
- Ancillary Features: Ladders and platforms were incorporated to enhance accessibility and maintenance capabilities. GSI also fabricated a stainless steel manifold that connected to the stack.
- External Finish: The entire structure was painted in-house, providing both aesthetic appeal and essential protection against environmental factors.
- Quality Assurance: Throughout the project, our Quality Assurance team worked with our fabricators on trial fitting to make sure field erection would be seamless.
- Field Erection: Precision in the shop translated to a flawless field installation for our customer, ensuring the stack met exact specifications without a hitch.
This project exemplifies Goodhart Sons’ comprehensive capabilities, from detailing to fabrication to finishing. By combining innovation with craftsmanship, we delivered a solution that met our customer’s needs and reinforced our reputation for excellence in the fabrication industry.
